Manager Safety & Health

The incumbent will coordinate the injury/illness prevention and regulatory compliance efforts within the Ohio Operations. This role will oversee the areas of safety, industrial hygiene, plant medical, and loss prevention/ emergency services, and lead the organization to zero incidents.


  • Serves as internal occupational safety and health consultant to the organization in developing strategies to control safety and health hazards and comply with applicable regulations;
  • Leads equipment and facility modification reviews, incident reviews, and outage result summaries;
  • Establishes and leads the ongoing maintenance of safety and health recordkeeping processes, including incident and OSHA records, training documentation, and completed safety forms;
  • Educates EHS staff and mill leadership on technical safety and industrial hygiene matters such as incident analysis, hazard assessments, regulatory requirements, and process hazard reviews;
  • Ensures and oversees coordination of the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) compliance program;
  • Develops, implements, and monitors OSHA compliance training efforts;
  • Ensures adequate mill medical services, to include hearing tests, respirator qualifications, injury/illness reviews and treatment, and related medical record management;
  • Leads the development, evaluation, and implementation of health and safety programs;
  • Serves as a liaison to regulatory agencies such as OSHA, local health agencies, and EPA;
  • Maintains FM Global (fire Insurance) guidelines and resolves any outstanding recommendations;
  • Develops and drives awareness, cultural change, and supervisory safety skill initiatives;
  • Maintains communication and cooperation with union representatives on safety and hygiene matters;
  • Develops the credentials of safety, industrial hygiene, plant medical, and loss prevention/emergency services to ensure a well-trained, certified, and skilled department;


  • Minimum educational requirements: B.S. (preferably M.S.) in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Medicine, or a related scientific field;
  • CSP, CIH, COHN, or CHMM, or the ability to certify;
  • Twelve (12) or more years work experience in the safety or health profession, preferably in manufacturing;
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills;
  • Strong computer and project management skills;
  • Strong technical skills, including mathematical and chemical calculations, and study interpretations;
  • Required for on-call status, response to serious incidents, weekend duty, and extended coverage during shutdowns.
